History and Future

South Marston Church of England (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School was opened in 1873 with 80 pupils. Alfred Bell, the Lord of the Manor at that time, gave the money for the building. The original building was the existing main hall.

As more children came to the school an "overflow" room was added to the front of the school. This room is now used as a resource centre and general workroom. In 1968 a further extension was added to provide office space and toilets.

Two "temporary" mobile classrooms were added in 1971 and 1987 respectively. They were finally removed in 1993 following the erection of a purpose-built, semi-permanent extension comprising three classrooms and a staff room. This greatly improved the standard of accommodation and freed the hall, as it was no longer occupied as a classroom. Our move to 4 classes in September 1999 meant that once again we had to use the hall as a classroom.

Following successful fundraising efforts by the school, our new building was officially opened by Julia Drown MP on 25th September 2001. It comprises a purpose-designed classroom for the youngest children, a room to lease to the Pre-school, and an ICT suite/Library, with fifteen networked Internet linked computers.

During the summer holidays of 2008 renovation of the old school room and the toilets in the main building have taken place. Further building projects will be planned to improve existing accommodation and add further rooms.

The school makes provision for children between the ages of 4+ and 11 who live in the village of South Marston and the surrounding area. The school admits children from outside this area in accordance with current Local Authority (LA) admission policy. The school roll is now between 100 and 110.

Outside facilities include playground, netball court and large grassed play area with Trim-Trail, wildlife pond and butterfly garden. More recent additions are the vegetable garden and the tyre planters. We are also grateful for the use of the church and the recreation ground.

The school puts on dramatic/musical/religious productions regularly. These have included services and nativity plays in the church, and others in the village or school hall. All children participate in these activities and we are very proud of their talents.
